The power of words

I first wrote these words after a visit to Rwanda during the period of commemoration of the Genocide. It seemed appropriate to re-blog them this HMD weekend where the theme if the power of words. The original title was: Favourite Food: Chips. It is truly impossible to comprehend what happened in a little over three months in Rwanda in 1994. The Kigali Genocide Memorial Museum I visited today offers a detailed and vivid insight into those one hundred terrible days when it seemed that hell had been unleashed on this beautiful country. As the exhibition itself says, genocides are not spontaneous but the culmination of months and years of rhetoric and tiny actions that, in themselves, can be dis

The end of silence

I like noise. Perhaps because I’m an extrovert, I can find silence to be a deathly hush. Maybe it also has something to do with growing up in a place where people were (and are) silenced through the threat of violence. As far from danger as from fear

When Methodist clergy get together, one of things we do is sing! And the Wesley hymn, 'Captain of Israel's host', is often on our lips. A two-verse hymn, its final lines still have the power to make my heart swell: As far as from danger as from fear, While love, Almighty love, is near. We are told that we live in an Age of Fear, but is that anything new? The current stand-off between Trump and Kim Jung-Un reminds us of the terror of nuclear oblivion faced by our parents and grandparents. And there must be a reason why 'Fear not' is uttered over a hundred times in the Bible. Fear is such a powerful emotion: for those who live with anxiety disorders, fear can feel like iron chains preventing a
